Volcanoes National Park : If you had to name one thing the Big Island is world famous for, it would be the Kilauea Volcano. In all the world there apparently isn't a more active and user-friendly volcano.
Created around this and the traditional volcano Mouna Loa, this national park displays the results of millions of years of volcanism that thrust a bare land from the sea and clothed it with unique ecosystems.

The Magnificient Beaches of Kohala : Big Island has fewer sand beaches per mile of shoreline than any of the other Hawaiian island. However, what beaches it has, are among the best in the state. The water off the west side of the Big Island (Kohala coast) is the clearest, cleanest and often the calmest water in all the islands. As for beach quality, Hapuna Beach is consistently named the best beach in the entire country, by travel magazines. Mauna Kea beach is not far behind.

The Green Sand Beach near South Point : A little off the Southern most point in the United States, is this strange phenomenon - a beautiful mixture of green and black sand on a beach.
This unique beach owes its name and color to a large deposit of a semi-precious gem called olivine liberally mixed with the black sand.
It can be reached either by a 2.5 mile hike or through a 4WD that's bone jarring in places.

Hilo : A strikingly beautiful town on the North East side of the island, where abundant rains give the flora a healthy sheen.

Pigging out at Lu'au : We've all seen them in movies. People sit at a table with a mai tai in one hand and a plate of kalua pig in the other. There's always a show where a fire dancer twirls a torch lit at both ends and hula dancers bend and sway to the beat of the music.

We attended one at Kona Village, and surprisingly enough, what we saw was exactly what we expected, and it's fun. The pig is baked in the ground all day, creating absolutely delicious results. The show was exciting and fast-paced.

The Sunsets : From the time we hit the western part of the island, we didn't miss a sunset - except for the Lu'au. And without fail, they were worth waiting for. We almost always awaited it in one beach restaurant or the other, and the very experience was relaxing - I'm sure the flowing drinks played some part in it as well.
