Multnomah Falls : Saw this on TV for the first time on a travel channel program covering top 10 destinations in Western US. It almost immediately became a 'must see' place and started this trip to Portland. Barely an hour away from Portland on the very scenic SR.30 that follows Columbia River Gorge dividing Oregon and Washington.

St.Helens Volcanic National Forest : About 90 miles from Portland, St.Helens volcano last major eruption was in 1980. Intense beauty surrounds the entire national forest surrounding the volcano - arising from the fresh lease of life the region got after the eruption.

Lava Tube @ Ape Cave : One of the longest intact lava tubes in the US. This section of pictures only covers the downslope portion of the cave - about 4000 feet long. It was pitch black inside the cave and required carrying multiple heavy sources of light. An almost perfect silence punctured only by the wet roof dripping ever so slightly. A constant 42F temperature throughout the year made carrying light sources difficult because the hands would start freezing after a while.

Almost all the pictures taken here are from extended exposure - ultra still posing for that duration, and waving the torch lights all over the cave to illuminate it enough for the camera.

Lava Tube @ Ape Cave

Lava Canyon : The upper muddy river has cut through this canyon formed by a lava flow a long time ago. The 'blue' waters of the 'muddy' river and the suspension bridges along the trails are some of the highlights.

Mt.Hood : The other volcano - much closer to Portland. It's possible to view both St.Helens and Mt.Hood from several locations on SR.35. Unfortunately, hit it rather late in the day and hence didn't get a chance to explore this beautiful area :(
