Fern Canyon : A narrow canyon, the walls of which are completely covered by ferns and mosses dripping with moisture. An unforgettable natural wonder that Steven Spielberg chose as a location for 'Jurrasic Park 2: The Lost World'.

The canyon trail follows Home Creek as it courses through the Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. This modest stream has, over the eons, carved a deep (50 to 80 feet) canyon through the sedimentary soils. The vertical walls sprout an amazing variety of ferns and other moisture-loving plants and mosses.

Cal-Barrel Road : Unpaved 3-mile road through old-growth redwood forest in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park just off Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway. Very narrow in places and winds through some spectacular scenery.

Klamath River Estuary : The third largest river in California, the Klamath River, meets the ocean here. Both fresh water life and sea water life co-exist here in abundance and because of this availability of food at the mouth of the river, there are almost always Pacific Gray Whales lurking.

Enderts Beach : From the Crescent Beach Overlook near Crescent City, the Enderts Beach trail follows tall bluffs, then drops to this rocky beach. Arrived here just at the low-tide of the day, and was able to see a lot of tide pools on the rocks.

False Klamath Cove : According to Yurok Indian legend, the Klamath river once used to empty into the ocean here. Hence the name. Reached here hoping to catch sunset in the late evening. Unfortunately, the dense clouds made sure that won't happen :(

Lost Coast & Mattole Valley : From the town of Ferndale, Mattole road leads the way to this isolated and incredible coast. It's almost as if the townfolks don't want you to find the road - there were no obvious signs anywhere telling the way. The road itself is quite rough in places, but has spectacular scenery every turn of the way from Ferndale to Petrolia.

The coast was more an experience than a destination. The ocean itself was quite angry - gale forced winds roughed up the ocean and whipped up waves as deep into the ocean as the eye could see. Occassionally standing outside the car became a tough enough task in itself - forget about photography. And when the rain finally started, it was almost with a thankful resignation that I chose to stay inside the car and drive away.

After Petrolia, the road snakes through Humboldt Redwoods State Park, and gives an indication of what to expect from 'Avenue of the Giants'.

Lost Coast & Mattole Valley

Avenue of the Giants : In some sense, this road is the tourist trap version of Cal-Barrel road or Mattole road (the Humboldt section of it). While it is fantastic in its own right, it didn't live up to the expectation, and in that sense, I shouldn't have left it as the last item on the menu. As the name implies, the road does snake its way dodging the redwood trunks, and inspires awe of the scale of things. However, it has all the familiar tourist trappings along the wayside (drive through trees for example), and it does get somewhat of a traffic too.

Avenue of the Giants

Davisson road, Gold Bluffs beach, and the rest.... : In Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, Davisson road leads to Gold Bluffs beach and to the head of the trail to Ferns Canyon. As the name implies, there are quite a few Prairies along the way that attract wildlife - Roosevelt Elk being the more prominent of them. The road itself is unpaved and quite scenic and has a few... water crossings.
