the Narrows : I recently read somewhere that the Narrows hike rates among the top ten hikes in the world. And that prompted this entire trip to the Zion National Park. It certainly lived up to the expectations and more.

The Zion Narrows trail is about 2000 feet deep into the Markagunt Plateau, and barely 10 feet wide in places. The path leaves little choice but to get wet in the waters of the Virgin River since the river is the trail for much of the hike. At times the water level was chest high and made going upstream extremely difficult. Didn't help that the rocks at the bottom are occassionally slippery, and that the water was low 40 degrees (freeeeeeeeeeezing!). Most of the trail though, the water was about knee high, and there were a few dry spots in between that made the hike a bit easier. Photography was made hard not only because of the very low lighting in the canyon, but also because of the need to keep the camera dry and both hands free for the hike. The fall colors along the trail were very vibrant, and every turn in the canyon was spectacular!

Angels landing : The actual Angels Landing Trail is only a half mile one way, but it is a spectacular half mile of climbing along a narrow sandstone ridge with sheer cliffs on both sides. From the top many landmarks of Zion National Park can be seen including the Virgin River, Big Bend, the Organ, Cathedral Mountain, Observation Point and Cable Mountain.

The West Rim Trail leading to the Angels Landing Trail is an additional two miles one way, and ends at Scotts lookout. This trail in itself is quite steep, but paved.
